If You Were Here
September 16 - October 30, 2004
An innovative and scholarly exhibition bringing together the work of nine, seemingly disparate artists from New York and Kentucky . These artists share a common thread in the treatment of an internal landscape in their work; an obsessive preoccupation with rendering a world constructed of enigmatic images that are amazing and, at times, unsettling.
The exhibition will show a commonality that transcends categories such as geographical location, educational level, and commercial appeal. The artists are: Jennifer Coates, NYC; Gerald Du Prie, Eastern Kentucky; Michael Eade, NYC; Michael Goodlett, Central Kentucky; David Humphrey, NYC; Charles Kinney, Eastern Kentucky; Gilbert Perin, Eastern Kentucky; Lawrence Tarpey, Lexington; Daniel Weiner, NYC.
If You Were Here sheds new light on work from local artists while exposing the Lexington community to the work of artists from outside of Kentucky who are working along parallel paths. This exhibition will illuminate how at a specific time in history artists share similar impulses to make work that reflects universal concerns and interests. The nine artists in this exhibition are connected through an interest in fantastic, even visionary, images that construct highly personal landscapes or psychological terrains.
Co-curated by LACC President and CEO, Jim Clark and Mary Dinaburg , an independent curator from New York , If You Were Here will originate at the LACC's ArtsPlace Gallery and travel to galleries in New York and Dallas . A color catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
