Exhibit Description
Guy Mendes, born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana attended the University of Kentucky 1966-1970. While at UK, he was an editor of The Kernel, and, in 1969, was a founding member of the underground newspaper, the blue-tail fly. He was an English major, concentrating on creative writing. In 1967 his professor Wendell Berry introduced him to the photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard, who changed the way he thought about photography—Guy has been looking for new ways to see the world ever since. He has four photography books published over the past 48 years. Guy worked at KET for 35 years as a graphic artist, writer and producer-director, winning two Emmys for his documentary work. Mendes’ photographs have appeared in Aperture, Newsweek, the New York Times, Playboy, Mother Jones, the Smithsonian, Outside Magazine, the Oxford American, and Garden & Gun. His work can be found in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the University of Kentucky Art Museum, the Speed Art Museum, the University of Louisville Photographic Archives, Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Cincinnati Art Museum, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Fidelity Investments and Maker's Mark Distillery.
