The Mercy Men
A Lexington staple and a favorite at the annual downtown Fifth-Third Bank Pavillion’s Thursday Night Live performances, The Mercy Men make their Lyric Theatre debut on Saturday April 30th. The Mercy Men have been featured at the Lexington Roots and Heritage Festival, Lexington Rotary Club’s Dancing with the Lexington Stars, the NEST and St Joseph Fundraisers, and have performed in Ohio, Tennessee, and throughout Central Kentucky, including Frankfort, Winchester, Paris, Richmond, Lexington, Stamping Ground, and other venues throughout Kentucky.
The Mercy Men Band was started in 1964 by Jake Graves, Lindsay Stewart, Kent Little, and Bill Blackford. The band was booked extensively through 1973. After the group disbanded in the late ’70s when members moved on to pursue other careers, Jake, Kent, and Lindsay got the band back together in April 2011 featuring its long-time crooner Charles Mealing and newcomer, song, dance, and stage man, Whit Whitaker as a lead male vocalist and percussionist. The Mercy Men is a funk, R&B, Soul band comprised of a well-accomplished and talented four-piece brass section, features a very talented core of rhythm guitar and bass players, a keyboardist extraordinaire, and three multi-talented lead vocal performers in Charlie, Whit, and songstress Toyajavonne Johnson.
