Leo Genovese — Solo Piano

GreenRoom Exchange & Origins Jazz are excited to announce the Grammy Award Winning Argentine Jazz Pianist Leo Genovese will perform a solo piano concert at Lexington’s Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center Black Box Theater on Saturday July 15th at 7:00 P.M.

Leonardo Genovese was born in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, in 1979. He began playing the piano at the age of 5. In 2001 he began his studies Berklee College of Music under Danilo Perez, Joanne Brackeen and Frank Carlberg

He has performed regularly with the Esperanza Spalding Group, Wayne Shorter Group and Jack Dejohnette, but may be most visible right now as the touring keyboardist for reunited progressive rockers the Mars Volta.

Genovese won a Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his solo on “Endangered Species” from Wayne Shorter ‘s album Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

When asked what recent project of his interweaves Latin American influences in an especially unique way, Genovese points to Ritual, his 2022 album with bassist Demian Cabaud, drummer Jeff Williams, and on four tracks, vocalist Nadia Larcher — who hails from Catamarca in northwestern Argentina.
“There are some Argentinian folkloric DNA elements in there,” Genovese says. “Cousins and sisters and far-away relatives of this music were merging in different parts of the continent with the mixture of African people, Indigenous people, and European people,” Genovese explains. “All of this is something that’s still giving fruit. I think it’s still unfolding,” he adds. “I think we are still looking into the question of who we really are.”
