Lexington History Museum
Exhibit Title
The Threads of History
Exhibit Description
Kim Dixon's approach to artistic endeavors stems from herexperiences as an African American woman, her professional and educational background as an archivist/historian and her innate love for drawing and sewing. The work she creates is often symbolically rooted in the past while simultaneously functioning as an academic critique on modern American life. It is important to Dixon to explore the concept of history as cyclical and a necessity to keep an ever-growing society moving forward in humane understanding. As such, the imagery she creates is designed to make one think and although she does want the viewer to appeal to the visual aesthetics of any one piece created, it is ultimately the many layered ideas she wishes for them to come away with. This is why she purposely uses fiber arts as the vehicle for her artwork.
