Mission Statement:

Antagonist Productions is dedicated to empowering local artists and enriching the Central Kentucky arts community. We work to support, strengthen, and expand the region's artistic landscape, placing local artists at the heart of everything we do.

Organization History:

Founded in 2017, Antagonist Productions is a Lexington, Kentucky-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization dedicated to producing bold, accessible theatre while creating meaningful opportunities for local artists and underserved communities. Since our inception, we have sought to remove barriers to participation in the arts by producing high-quality theatrical experiences, investing in local talent, and developing programs that use storytelling as a catalyst for education, empathy, and community connection.

Antagonist Productions began with a simple but ambitious mission: to create professional opportunities for Central Kentucky artists while telling stories that matter. What started as a small producing company has grown into one of the region's most active community-centered arts organizations, presenting productions that range from contemporary dramas and new works to Shakespeare, musicals, and immersive theatrical experiences. Along the way, the organization has built a reputation for championing local playwrights, directors, designers, and performers while ensuring that audiences of all backgrounds have access to affordable, and often free, professional theatre.

One of the organization's defining achievements has been the development of I Come From, a groundbreaking creative writing and theatrical initiative launched in partnership with The Voices Inside in 2017. The program transforms original writing from incarcerated individuals into professionally produced staged performances, giving voice to stories that are rarely heard while fostering dialogue around justice, humanity, and rehabilitation. Following its initial production, I Come From toured multiple Kentucky correctional facilities, allowing incarcerated audiences to experience work created by their peers. Since then, the program has continued to expand through recurring public productions, creative writing workshops, and programming within Kentucky's juvenile detention system, reinforcing Antagonist Productions' commitment to reducing recidivism through arts education and creative expression.

In 2021, Antagonist Productions launched its annual Shakespeare in the Park series in partnership with Lexington Parks & Recreation, establishing what has become one of Lexington's signature summer cultural events. Presented free of charge each July in Woodland Park, the festival combines professional Shakespeare productions with live local music, food vendors, community partners, and family programming, attracting thousands of audience members each year. Previous productions have included The Taming of the Shrew, Othello, The Merry Wives of Windsor, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo & Juliet, and Much Ado About Nothing, demonstrating the organization's commitment to making classical theatre accessible to the broader community.

Supporting new artistic voices has remained central to the organization's mission. Through initiatives such as the Script Drive, Antagonist Productions solicits original plays from Central Kentucky playwrights and selects winning scripts for fully funded productions. This commitment to local storytelling has helped cultivate emerging playwrights while expanding opportunities for artists to develop and premiere new work within the region.

As the organization continued to grow, Antagonist Productions expanded beyond production into arts education and creative workforce development. Today, the organization offers classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults covering acting, musical theatre, improvisation, scenic arts, filmmaking, dance, and technical theatre. These educational opportunities provide structured artistic training while strengthening Central Kentucky's creative community.

To further support local artists, Antagonist Productions established a dedicated Creative Hub in Lexington. The facility includes a black box theatre, scene shop, dance studio, podcast studio, green screen room, self-tape audition room, rehearsal spaces, and classrooms that are available for productions, rehearsals, classes, recording sessions, and community events. By combining affordable rentals with educational programming and collaborative opportunities, the Creative Hub serves as a year-round resource for artists, educators, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations throughout Central Kentucky.

The organization continues to innovate by expanding into new artistic disciplines. Recent initiatives include the launch of PORCHLIGHT, a free outdoor community arts concert celebrating local musicians, dancers, and performers while raising support for regional arts programming, as well as the organization's first feature film collaboration, Rocky Wake, produced in partnership with SmokeyDog Entertainment. These projects reflect Antagonist Productions' ongoing commitment to broadening artistic opportunities while investing in Kentucky-based creators across multiple disciplines.

Today, Antagonist Productions stands as a multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to strengthening Central Kentucky through theatre, education, film, music, and community engagement. By producing compelling performances, nurturing emerging artists, providing affordable creative space, and creating programs that elevate underrepresented voices, the organization continues to fulfill its mission of making the arts more accessible, more inclusive, and more impactful for all.

Full Project Description:

Antagonist Productions requests $5,000 to support Shakespeare in the Park, our annual free outdoor theatre production that provides professional quality Shakespeare performances and accessible arts experiences for the Lexington community. Shakespeare in the Park is one of Antagonist Productions’ signature community programs, designed to remove financial barriers to live theatre while bringing exceptional theatrical experiences directly into public spaces. Each summer, audiences from across Central Kentucky gather to experience a fully staged Shakespeare production featuring local and regional artists. By offering the program free of charge, we ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation and welcomes families, students, seniors, pets and first-time theatre patrons into a shared cultural experience.

The 2027 production will transform Woodland Park into an outdoor theatre space where community members can gather to enjoy live performance in an accessible and welcoming environment. Audiences are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and their own picnic while experiencing a professionally produced Shakespeare production under the stars. In addition to the performance itself, Antagonist Productions incorporates community engagement through pre-show programming, local artist involvement, and partnerships that create a broader celebration of the arts.

The program is implemented through a comprehensive production process beginning several months before performances. Antagonist Productions oversees all aspects of the project, including artistic planning, budgeting, casting, production design, marketing, community partnerships, technical operations, and audience services. A team of directors, actors, designers, stage managers, technicians, interns, and volunteers collaborate to develop and present the production.

Following auditions, the cast and creative team participate in an intensive rehearsal process. During this time, designers and technicians create costumes, scenery, props, lighting, and sound elements specifically adapted for an outdoor performance environment. Antagonist Productions also manages venue logistics, volunteer coordination, accessibility considerations, and community outreach to ensure that each performance provides a safe, professional, and welcoming experience for all attendees.

Marketing and audience development are essential components of a successful run. We promote Shakespeare in the Park through social media, media outreach, community partnerships, and direct engagement with local organizations to reach both returning patrons and new audiences. The free admission model allows the program to serve a broad cross-section of the community, including individuals who may not otherwise have access to professional theatre.

Having previously received program support funding for Shakespeare in the Park, Antagonist Productions continues to grow and strengthen the program by adding new ways to engage the community. The 2027 production will expand opportunities for audiences to experience the arts through enhanced community engagement, broader outreach efforts, and collaborations that bring together multiple creative disciplines, including theatre, music, musical theatre, dance and film. We will continue investing in local artists by creating paid opportunities for performers, designers, technicians, filmmakers, musicians, and emerging creative professionals to share their talents while contributing to a larger celebration of the arts in Lexington.

Antagonist Productions will also continue improving the overall audience experience through stronger partnerships with new major community partners like The Bluegrass Realtors and Ale-8-One, more pre-show programming featuring new local musicians, dancers and youth theatre programs. While also continuing to develop the technical and logistical elements necessary to produce a high-quality outdoor theatrical event. These improvements build on the success of previous Shakespeare in the Park productions while allowing the program to reach more community members and provide greater opportunities for local artists.

Grant funding will support artist compensation, production personnel, scenic and costume materials, technical equipment, marketing and outreach, accessibility efforts, insurance, and other costs necessary to present a professional-quality production while maintaining free admission for the public.

Through Shakespeare in the Park, Antagonist Productions continues its mission of creating bold, accessible theatrical experiences that connect people through the arts. By activating public spaces, supporting local artists, and eliminating financial barriers, this program strengthens Lexington’s cultural community and ensures that exceptional theatre remains available to everyone.

Benefit to the community:

Shakespeare in the Park provides meaningful benefits to the Lexington community by making professional-quality theatre accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability to pay. By presenting a free outdoor production in a public space, we remove financial barriers that often prevent individuals and families from experiencing live performance and creates an opportunity for many first-time theatre patrons to engage with the arts.

Over the past four years, Shakespeare in the Park has experienced tremendous growth as community interest and participation have continued to expand. What began as a program serving approximately 830 audience members over two weekends has grown into one of Antagonist Productions’ largest annual community events. In 2026, the production of Much Ado About Nothing welcomed more than 2,770 attendees, demonstrating the increasing demand for accessible, high-quality arts experiences in Lexington. This growth reflects the program’s ability to build lasting relationships with audiences while creating a stronger connection between local artists and the community.

The program transforms a local park into a shared community gathering space where neighbors, families, artists, and visitors come together through the power of storytelling and live performance. Shakespeare in the Park encourages connection, conversation, and belonging while creating a welcoming environment where audiences of all ages can experience the arts in a relaxed and accessible setting. Beyond theatre, the program celebrates Lexington’s broader creative community by incorporating and collaborating with artists from multiple disciplines, including musicians, dancers, filmmakers, designers, and other local creatives. These collaborations expand the audience experience while highlighting the diverse artistic talent within Central Kentucky. Shakespeare in the Park also creates valuable opportunities for local artists and emerging arts professionals by providing paid work for performers, designers, technicians, and creative team members. This investment supports the growth of the region’s creative workforce and allows artists to continue developing their craft while contributing to a major community arts event.

Ultimately, Shakespeare in the Park strengthens Lexington’s cultural landscape by bringing people together, activating public spaces, supporting local artists, and ensuring that exceptional arts experiences are available to the entire community, not only those who can afford a ticket to traditional theatre experiences.

Promotion and Marketing:

Antagonist Productions uses a multi-channel communications strategy to reach both existing arts audiences and community members who may not traditionally engage with theatre. We distribute information through our website, email newsletters, social media platforms, digital advertising, press releases, community calendars, and partnerships with local organizations. Our branding focuses on accessibility, creativity, and community connection, positioning programs like Shakespeare in the Park as welcoming experiences for everyone. We use storytelling, artist spotlights, and audience engagement to build excitement and create lasting relationships with patrons. To reach new and niche audiences, we collaborate with schools, community organizations, new local businesses, artists, and nonprofit partners who help us connect with diverse communities. We also work with local media, arts organizations, and tourism partners to expand awareness and highlight the cultural impact of our programs.

Target Audience:

The target audience for Shakespeare in the Park is the entire Lexington community, with a focus on creating an inclusive experience that welcomes residents of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of arts experience. Because the program is free and presented in a public space, it is designed to reach individuals and families who may not traditionally attend theatre due to cost, accessibility, or unfamiliarity with the performing arts. The program serves longtime theatre patrons, students, families, seniors, local artists, and first-time arts attendees while creating a shared community experience that reflects the diversity of Lexington's art community. Through outreach and partnerships, we work to ensure that Shakespeare in the Park is accessible and welcoming to the broadest possible audience throughout Central Kentucky.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Shakespeare in the Park engages diverse artists by creating opportunities for performers, designers, technicians, musicians, and other creative professionals from across Central Kentucky to collaborate on a large-scale community production. Antagonist Productions is committed to building inclusive creative teams that provide opportunities for both emerging and established artists. Through open auditions, community partnerships and collaboration across disciplines, such as theatre, music, dance, youth musical theatre, and film, the project brings together artists from various backgrounds and experiences. By providing paid opportunities and a professional creative environment, Shakespeare in the Park supports local artists while ensuring the production reflects the creativity and diversity of the Lexington community.

Partnerships and Collaborations:

Shakespeare in the Park is made possible through a network of arts, community, civic, and business partnerships that help Antagonist Productions create an accessible and impactful cultural experience for Lexington. Each year, we collaborate with Lexington Parks & Recreation to bring free outdoor theatre to Woodland Park, allowing community members from across the region to experience professional quality performance at no cost. We are also supported by the City of Lexington, whose commitment to the arts helps make this community program possible. We have developed meaningful partnerships with arts education organizations, including the Bluegrass Community and Technical College Theatre Department and Innovation Arts Academy. These collaborations provide opportunities for students, emerging artists, and community members be in a professional theatre production while strengthening the next generation of creative talent in Central Kentucky.

The success of Shakespeare in the Park is also supported by local businesses and sponsors who believe in the value of accessible arts programming. Community partners such as Bank of the Bluegrass and Clark & Cornett Attorneys at Law provide vital support that helps sustain free programming for the public. Additional collaborators, including West Sixth Brewing, Ghost Features Productions, SmokeyDog Entertainment, Classic Rock 92.1, and the University of Kentucky Arts Advisory Council help to expand our reach, promote community-wide engagement, and connect us with diverse audiences. These partnerships allow Shakespeare in the Park to extend beyond a single theatrical production and become a true community collaboration. By bringing together artists, local businesses, food and drinks vendors, civic organizations, and residents, the program strengthens Lexington’s creative ecosystem while creating a shared experience that celebrates the arts and the people who make our community vibrant.

Project Goals:

The goals of Shakespeare in the Park are to increase access to high-quality theatre, support local artists, strengthen community connections, and create meaningful opportunities for residents to engage with the arts. These goals directly align with Antagonist Productions’ mission of creating bold, accessible theatrical experiences while nurturing artists and making the arts available to everyone, regardless of background or financial ability. By presenting a free outdoor production, Shakespeare in the Park removes any barrier to participation and integrates the arts into the lives of the Lexington community. The project supports our commitment to community engagement, artistic collaboration, and expanding access to creative experiences that inspire and bring people together.

Evaluation Methods:

We will evaluate the success through both quantitative and qualitative measures. Program goals will be assessed through audience attendance numbers, audience feedback, artist participation, community partner input, media engagement, and overall community response. Tracking attendance growth and engagement will help determine the program’s effectiveness in reaching its target audience and expanding access to the arts.

The quality of the artistic work will be evaluated through internal production reviews, feedback, and assessment of the work created by the production team, including directors, actors, designers, technicians, and other creative personnel. We will evaluate the strength of the program’s primary focus, the quality of the creative process and the overall audience experience to ensure the production continues to meet professional standards.

We will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility through careful planning, budgeting, and ongoing project management. Our team tracks expenses, production timelines, staffing needs, and partnerships throughout the process to ensure that the production stays on schedule and within budget. The experience and expertise of our artistic and production teams will be an important part of evaluating the program’s success, ensuring that we continue to create a sustainable, high-quality experience for both artists and audiences. Program activities will be documented through photographs, video recordings, social media content, press coverage, audience testimonials, artist reflections, production records, and attendance tracking. These materials will provide a record of the project’s impact and inform future planning, fundraising, and community engagement efforts. Ultimately, the success of Shakespeare in the Park will be measured by its ability to bring people together, provide meaningful opportunities for local artists, and create an accessible, high-quality arts experience that enriches the Lexington community.
